What are the Vedas, really?
The Vedas (from vid — "to know") are not a book written by anyone. The Rishis — ancient meditators — sat in deep silence and heard them. That is why they are called श्रुति (śruti), "that which was heard."
There are four Vedas. Each has an outer layer (hymns, rituals, songs) and an inner layer — the Upanishads — where the philosophy turns inward and asks the only question that matters:
"Who am I, behind all this?"
You don't need Sanskrit. You don't need a temple. You need only a quiet mind and one honest question. That is the whole path.

The Upanishads — the heart of the Vedas
The word उपनिषद् (upa-ni-ṣad) means "to sit down near" — a student sitting close to a teacher, in the quiet of a forest, receiving what cannot be shouted.
There are 108 traditional Upanishads. Only ten or so are studied in depth — these are the principal Upanishads. They are short. Some are only a page. But they contain the entire philosophy of non-duality (अद्वैत, Advaita): the seer and the seen are one.

How to live this today
- १Sit in silence for 5 minutes. Do nothing. Watch what remains when you stop trying — that is the Ātman the Upanishads point to.
- २Chant ॐ once, slowly. The Mandukya Upanishad says the entire universe is contained in this sound. Feel it in your chest.
- ३Ask "Who is aware of this?" at any random moment. This is Neti Neti in real time — Advaita as practice, not theory.
- ४Serve one person quietly. The Vedas call this karma-yoga — action offered without hunger for reward.
